Seventeen-Year-Old Girl Victim in Central Sweden School Sword Attack

Police confirmed that a 17-year-old girl was injured during a deadly sword attack at a school in central Sweden, police stated Saturday.

An 18-year-old man attacked the Brinell School in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm, with a sword while classes were ongoing Friday. The incident resulted in one death and three injuries, two of which were severe.

Police reported that the suspect has been arrested and the case is under investigation for murder and attempted murder. Authorities indicated they have no reason to believe there were additional perpetrators involved.

Vastmanland County, where Fagersta is located, specified that the two seriously injured individuals were 12 and 17 years old. A third person, also under 18, sustained minor injuries and was discharged from a hospital, according to Swedish news agency TT.

On Saturday morning, approximately 70 people gathered at a memorial site organized by the municipality, bringing flowers and lighting candles, TT reported.

No official information has been released regarding the attacker's motive.

Sweden’s national police stated that investigators have conducted two house searches related to the suspect. Many witnesses are expected to be interviewed as part of the investigation.

The region entered a state of emergency on Friday, which was lifted by Saturday.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented on the violence in Fagersta via an earlier X post, lamenting it occurred "right after the summer break."

He stated, “We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”

Sweden has experienced a series of violent school attacks in recent years.

Last year, an attack at an education center in Örebro, central Sweden, resulted in 11 deaths, including the gunman, prompting the government to propose stricter gun laws. This event is considered the worst mass shooting in the country's history.

In 2022, an 18-year-old man attacked two female teachers with a knife and an ax at a school in Malmo, killing them.

In 2015, a 21-year-old local man attacked a school in the southern industrial city of Trollhattan, stabbing three people to death before being fatally shot by police. Authorities classified this as a racist hate crime, noting he systematically targeted dark-skinned victims at Kronan school in Trollhattan, where most students are foreign-born.
