2 Palestinians Killed at Gaza Mass Protest

Two Palestinians are dead as tens of thousands of Palestinian protesters gather at a border fence between Gaza and Israel for the one-year anniversary of weekly protests along the border fence, VOA reports.

Gaza’s health ministry said 17-year-old Adham Amara, was shot in the face during the protests and later died at a protest camp in Gaza City. It said 13 other Palestinians were wounded by live fire. Thirty-three protesters in all were reported wounded.

The Israeli army said the protesters threw stones and explosive devices toward the Israeli border. It said they also lit tires on fire.

The army said it was using “riot dispersal means” against the Palestinians.

Just hours before the protests began, Gaza’s health ministry said a 21-year-old Palestinian man, Mohammed Saad, was shot dead by Israeli forces near the border fence.

The protests also fall on what is known as “Land Day” by Arab and Palestinian residents of Israel. Land day commemorates the deaths in 1976 of six Arab and Palestinian demonstrators against the Israeli expropriation of Arab and Palestinian lands.

Egypt is attempting to craft a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas, which rules Gaza.
