Turkish police officer cuts through ice in frozen lake to save stranded puppy

A puppy clinging to life on an ice sheet in a frozen lake has been rescued by a police diver, reports ABC.net.

Authorities were called to a lake in the eastern Turkish province of Van on Wednesday, finding a small dog stranded on a floating piece of ice.

Video published by the municipality of Van showed diver Burak Okten breaking the ice around the dog with his arm and rescuing the puppy.

“It was the final moments, I barely made it,” Mr Okten said after bringing the dog to safety.

“It’s good we rescued [it].”

Rescuers performed CPR on the dog after it was brought to shore.

The dog was suffering from hypothermia and was wrapped in towels before being taken to a veterinary clinic on a stretcher.

Municipal officials said the dog was receiving the necessary treatment for its condition and was expected to fully recover.
