French armed police preparing operation in Strasbourg’s Neudorf district: witness

A police intervention is underway in the Neudorf district of Strasbourg, reports Euronews. This is the area where Cherif Chekatt, the suspect in the Strasbourg Christmas market shooting, was last seen on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old escaped police, sparking a nationwide manhunt that also extended across the German border.

Elite officers from the RAID police unit fanned out along one street, some with their guns trained on the houses in front of them, live television pictures showed. Other officers extended a security perimeter in the neighbourhood.

It was not immediately clear if they had located the suspect shooter or were carrying out a separate raid linked to the investigation into Tuesday’s attack.

Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, told the French Senate that this was an exploratory operation.

“This is not an official report and it does I am not announcing anything, let the investigation continue.”
