Emmanuel Macron welcomed by Xi Jinping upon arrival at Beijing meeting

France and China hope to boost multilateralism and free trade following a meeting between the country’s leaders on Wednesday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said his talks with French counterpart Emmanuel Macron would send a “strong signal to the world about steadfastly upholding” the agreements, and would work together “to build open economies”.

The two presidents met for the formal meeting in Beijing on Wednesday, where they are expected to later sign an agreement that deems the Paris climate agreement as “irreversible”.

Macron, who was accompanied by his wife Brigitte, was greeted by Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan on arrival at the Great Hall of the People, where a welcoming ceremony was in full swing.
