British Parliament voted 432-202 against Theresa May’s Brexit deal

Theresa May suffered one of the biggest defeats of any government in a UK parliament for almost a hundred years as MPs rejected her Brexit deal with the EU, Euronews reports.

432 MPs opposed her proposal, compared with 202 who supported her as many in her own party voted with the opposition.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn immediately called for a vote of no confidence in the government.

EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said he noted regreted the vote by Parliament.

The news leaves the country in uncertainty as the deadline set for leaving the EU on March 29 approaches. Unless a new deal can be agreed, the UK will depart with a hard Brexit, amid fears of the impact on business and the supply of imported goods as trade is disrupted.

If she survives tomorrow’s confidence vote, Theresa May will have to present a new proposal to Parliament on Monday. The scale of the defeat will make it difficult for her to present anything similar to the deal so overwhelmingly rejected.

EU Council president Donald Tusk Tweeted that a deal seemed to be impossible and that no one wanted a No Deal Brexit, asking “Who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?”

A number of MPs from different parties have called for another referendum to allow the British people to vote again on EU membership now that they have more detail on what a Brexit would look like.

However, Theresa May has rejected this solution as a “betrayal” of voters.
